Bluegrass On The Bogs introduced BogMasters in 2016 — intensive two-hour master classes taught by six of the Northeast's finest musicians, many of whom also perform on the Main Stage Friday and Saturday evenings. Each class is designed for intermediate players ready to sharpen their technique, learn new tricks, and deepen their musical understanding in a focused small-group environment.
BogMasters classes bring together intermediate players who want to push their playing beyond the ordinary. Led by seasoned musicians from the region, each session is built around small groups so that everyone gets heard, coached, and encouraged. The setting is deliberately intimate, away from the bustle of the main stages, where questions are welcome and mistakes are simply part of learning. Rather than a lecture, a BogMasters class feels like a conversation between players who share a love of acoustic string music and a wish to grow. It is a place to be curious, to try unfamiliar things, and to be reminded that progress comes from playing alongside others.
The value of a small group lies in the attention each player receives. With only a few seats in the room, instructors can listen closely, offer suggestions shaped to the individual, and adjust the pace to fit the people in front of them. Players trade ideas, ask about tone and timing, and test new approaches in a supportive space. These classes are not aimed at absolute beginners; they assume some comfort with an instrument and a willingness to stretch. What emerges is shared momentum, where one person's breakthrough nudges everyone else forward and the whole room lifts together.
Sessions range across the skills that make acoustic bluegrass and its offshoots come alive: steady rhythm, confident lead breaks, harmony singing, blending with other instruments, and the art of following a jam without losing the thread. Instructors may explore improvisation, dynamics, repertoire, or the small details of tone that separate a capable player from a compelling one. Because the material suits intermediate hands, participants can expect to be challenged without being overwhelmed. Players leave with fresh ideas to practice, a clearer sense of where their own music might travel next, and the encouragement to keep chasing it.
BogMasters fits naturally into a weekend that celebrates acoustic music in the open air. Between classes, players wander back toward the campground for informal jams, browse artisan and food vendors, drop into workshops, or simply swim and boat on the water. Families find kids events, and anyone needing to unwind can seek out holistic treatments. The classes become one thread in a larger fabric of listening, playing, and sharing. For many, the friendships and musical sparks kindled in those small rooms linger long after the last notes drift across the bogs.
How It Works
Class Size & Level
Each BogMasters class is limited to 6 students and requires a minimum of 2 students to run. These classes are especially designed for intermediate players — not beginners.
Fee & Payment
The fee is $40 for a two-hour class. Payments can be made in two ways:
- By mail: send payment to Mary Maguire, PO Box 430, Tilton, NH 03276.
- In person: cash or check given directly to the instructor.
For questions, contact Mary Maguire at (603) 455-0238 or maguiresong@bluegrassonthebogs.com.
Instructors
Instructors are drawn from the Northeast's top acoustic musicians — many of the same artists you'll see on the Main Stage throughout the weekend. Check the Schedule page for this year's lineup.
Small Groups
Only six students per class — plenty of individual attention and hands-on guidance from the instructor.
